Starting in autumn 2024, the University of Málaga (UMA) offers a one semester full-time study program (título própio) called “Diploma of Specialization in Asian Studies: From the Himalayas to Korea”. All courses will take place between 14 October 2024 and 25 February 2025. Everyone is welcome to register for the program.
The International Institute for Tibetan and Asian Studies (ITAS) will contribute to this program by teaching four different courses:
- Introduction to Classical Tibetan I (45 hours of teaching)
- Introduction to Classical Tibetan II (45 hours of teaching)
- Introduction to Tibetan History and Culture (30 hours of teaching)
- Introduction to Buddhist Philosophy and Abhidharma Studies (30 hours of teaching)
The courses taught by ITAS will be open for single course registration. Teaching language will be English. The courses will be either block-taught or a mix of block-teaching and distributed online sessions. The block-taught part will be hybrid, i.e., students can take part on-site in Málaga at the UMA premises or online at their choice.
The prerequisite for the above courses is a good command of English and for the “Introduction to Classical Tibetan” it is also required to know the Tibetan Alphabet already. If you have not joined one of our previous courses on the Tibetan Alphabet, you will have to learn it in self-study prior to the course. There are a lot of good online resources.
Dates have not been fixed. We will announce them, as soon as they are confirmed. The idea is to have about one week of intense block teaching for each course. For the Tibetan courses this would then be followed by weekly online sessions for some weeks. Also the fees for the single courses have not been fixed yet but will be at an affordable level. We expect to be able to announce dates and course fees some time in September.
Please, note that the full-time program will only take place, if a threshold of enrolled students is reached. Registration for the single courses will only open after this threshold has been reached. Whether the courses take place or not might only be known by the beginning of October.
For specific questions about the courses taught by ITAS, you may contact info@itas-uni.eu. Please, don’t ask about dates and prices. We will communicate them via this channel, as soon as we know them.
For questions about the full-time program by UMA (e.g., conditions for admission etc.), please, directly address them to the contact stated on the UMA webpage and note that they might not reply during the summer break of the university which lasts until around mid-September.

The information about the full-time program is in Spanish only. The courses taught by ITAS teachers will definitely be in English, but some of the other courses might be taught in Spanish.
If you are interested in learning Tibetan only, we suggest taking just the above-mentioned four courses (or a subset of them, if your time is restricted). If you have a wider interest and more time, you might want to consider pursuing the complete program.
