Basics for Tibetan Studies: Learning the Tibetan Alphabet
29 September – 1 October 2025 (3 days)
In cooperation with the University of Malaga (UMA), the International Institute for Tibetan and Asian Studies (ITAS) is offering a three-day intensive Tibetan language course. We are happy to offer a possibility to taste the Tibetan language. The course can be attended on-site or online.
During these three packed days, our lecturer will help you achieve your first step in studying Tibetan – reading the Tibetan script. This time, we set ourselves a bold goal – after just 3 days, everybody will be able to read a text in Tibetan and write down the correct transcription in his or her own language!
The course is open to everybody interested and does not require individual preparations.
Date: 29 September – 1 October 2025 (3 days)
4pm – 8pm CEST (every day)
(The course takes place right after the Karma Guen summer course with Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche.)
Location: Karma Guen or online (Zoom link will be sent to you before the course)
(Buddhist Center Karma Guen, Aldea Alta, 1, 29718 Vélez-Málaga, Spain)
Price:
ITAS/UMA students: 50€
Other students: 65€
(Diamondway students are eligible for the reduced price for ITAS. Please tick ITAS in the registration form.)
Course requirements: fluent spoken English
Registration (via UMA): https://forms.gle/JqMsffjJQerwrQ8z6
Payment deadline: Payments are accepted until 21 September 2025. Please register before that date (and as early as possible, please).
After registration, UMA will send you an e-mail with the registration link asking you to pay. However, the university will be closed during the whole month of August. Thus, you will not receive an e-mail from them during that period. It is normal that there is no automatic confirmation of your registration. No need to worry or ask UMA or ITAS in August, if the registration worked. If you don’t receive an e-mail after the first week of September, you may ask UMA about it.
UMA contact: asiacatedra@uma.es (questions about registration, payments)
ITAS Contact: info@itas-uni.eu (questions about course content)
Accommodation: For those who seek accommodation in the Karma Guen Buddhist Centre during the course, please contact karmaguen@diamondway-center.org about your request.
Outlook
This course is meant as a teaser to find out one’s interest to really engage in studying (Classical) Tibetan. At some point, we plan to start again a new intake into our cycle of Classical Tibetan courses, however, there is no timeline yet.
Additional information
If you consider taking the on-site option, please note that Karma Guen plans to host an 8th Karmapa course with Jamgön Kongtrul Rinpoche from 19 to 28 September 2025.
